Juliet Gray, special care dentist at the Canterbury District Health Board, with patient Stephen Mudgway, who uses a wheelchair and has multiple sclerosis.

Christchurch wheelchair user Stephen Mudgway says even if he could afford it, access to dental care is ‘’literally and financially impossible’’.

Mudgway has multiple sclerosis and has needed to use a wheelchair for the last 10 years. He’s one of many New Zealander’s struggling to get adequate dental care – a problem health professionals say is leading to a resurgence in intensive care admissions and third-world oral health problems.

”You go to a normal dentist and you’re lucky to get in the door, even ones which say they are wheelchair friendly have a lip and you can’t get an electric wheelchair over those,” Mudgway said.

”You’re stuck where you can go, if you go into the hospital the rooms are big and the chair is movable

As a patient in the healthcare system, you’re the customer but more often than not, it does not feel like. Tend is the modern dental studio that brings a customer-centric experience to dentistry, borrowing practices from the hospitality industry. Whether it’s in-person or through a virtual consultation, Tend places an emphasis on reducing the anxiety associated with a visit to the dentist. For example, patients can drift into their favorite Netflix show while undergoing treatments. In addition to routine cleanings, Tend offers teeth whitening, braces, root canals, veneers, and more. Next year, the company, still less than a year old, plans to expand into direct-to-consumer oral health products for its customers.

AlleyWatch caught up with CEO Doug Hudson to learn more about the experience of building Tend 150-person team, the company’s geographic expansion plans, and most recent round of funding, which brings the total funding raised to $73M.

Dental Tips for a Healthy Halloween

“It is all about having parental control or self-control,” stated Gregory Olson, DDS, professor. “Having a piece of candy won’t do too much damage to a healthy mouth. However, the type of candy you eat, how many you eat, how long it lasts, and how you care for your teeth afterward make all the difference.”

‘Eating candy in moderation and being cautious about what type is a great approach to avoid tooth decay.

Avoid sticky crawlers

Hard or chewy candies like taffy or gummy worms are the worst type of candy for teeth, as they stay in your mouth for a longer period of time and may stick to your teeth, which can lead to potential harm if not washed out.

Sour candy adds an added level of harm to gummies because they are both sticky and acidic. Although it’s extra tasty, consuming a lot of this candy

New owner, new location for St. John Dental | Island Life

The island’s only dental practice has a new home and a new owner. After close to three decades of vacationing on St. John, Dr. Laney Smith took ownership of St. John Dental Aug. 1 and relocated the practice from its longtime home at Boulon Center to Palm Plaza near the Westin.

Smith owned a dental practice in Atlanta for 25 years before selling in 2017. She stayed on there for a year to help the new owner make a smooth transition, then applied for her dental license in the Virgin Islands.

“I met [previous St. John Dental owner] John Purpura, and the timing was just great,” said Smith. “Whenever I could be here filling in, I was. The more I was here, the more John was in Orlando where his family had moved, and he gave me a great offer on the practice.”

Almost immediately after Smith purchased the business,
